For this blog post, I chose the new off-Broadway revival show Parade. Parade is based on a true story of Leo Frank, a Jewish man who was lynched in 1915 he was wrongfully convicted for the rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl. This Broadway show is written by Alfred Uhry and was originally shown in the early 2000 but was recently brought back this month. it was faced with anti semitic attacks by Neo-Nazis defaced the building in which the show was supposed to be played in.
I was shocked when I was reading this article that there were still people who chose to protest a show that was about a person who was Jewish and faced antisemitic issues, and here we are in 2023 dealing with the same issues, but in a different manner it was really disappointing. As stated in the article the people had the right to protest, but it was disappointing to say the least.
An article by AMNY, the actor who plays Frank, Ben Platt shared on his Instagram stated “Very ugly and scary, but a wonderful reminder of why we’re telling this.“ In a while he’s telling the truth, It is unfortunate that there was such an aggressive response to a play about a person who is falsely accused and lost their life, and was unable to. prove they were not guilty.
The the parade off-Broadway revival showed that it has a current cultural, social, and political impact compared to when it was originally first shown in Broadway.
